Schools we have

Community schools

We fund these schools, we write the admissions policy and offer places in line with the policy.

Voluntary Controlled Schools

We fund these schools, we write the admissions policy and offer places in line with the policy.

Foundation (Trust) schools

We fund these schools. Each school decides its own admissions policy and is responsible for ranking all applications against the policy.

Voluntary Aided schools

We fund these schools along with a contribution from the religious body. Each school decides its own admissions policy and is responsible for ranking all applications against the policy.

Academies

Academies are funded directly by central government (ESFA). Each academy trust decides its own admission policy and is responsible for ranking all applications against the policy.

Free Schools

Free Schools are funded directly by central government (ESFA). Each free school trust decides its own admission policy and is responsible for ranking all applications against the policy.

Private schools

Private schools (also known as independent schools) are funded by parents or carers who pay fees. Each school decides its own admission policy and they offer places themselves, in line with the policy. You must apply directly to these schools.

Partially selective schools

Some schools are partially selective. They can allocate up to 10% of their places to children who have a natural talent in a specialist subject. The subject is usually an art, sport or language. To find out if a school is partially selective, check it's admissions policy.

• state boarding schools
  
• selective schools (schools you have to pass a test for)
