What modern slavery is

Modern slavery can include many types of exploitation such as:

• sexual exploitation (including forced prostitution and the abuse of children)
• domestic servitude (being forced to work in someone's home, often performing domestic chores and childcare)
  
• forced labour (being forced to work long hours for little or no pay)
  
• criminal exploitation (pressuring someone to commit a crime, including in the drug trade)

Information for professionals

Professionals can report information about modern slavery online through a West Yorkshire Police portal. You can use this to share information where there is not enough evidence to make a referral, but there are worrying signs, such as:

• over occupation of houses
  
• occupants of houses changing regularly
  
• people who are fearful of authorities
  
• workers showing signs of physical abuse or untreated medical problems
  
• people with malnutrition, exhaustion and poor personal hygiene
